This is me. I think I was three years old, and yes, I can still totally rock a bowtie. I grew up in Akron, Ohio with a house full of brothers and sisters. We didn't have a lot of money but I didn't notice all that much. No one I knew had any money. I was not a great student so when I graduated I really had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I did have this notion that it should be something that made me happy so I tried a lot of different things; I made pasta, sang in a punk rock band, did stand up comedy, and waited a lot of tables so I could afford to do all those fun things..
I put off college for a while (and to be frank - I was pretty sure I couldn't even get into college). Somehow, I did well on a test and I got into Ohio University. Much to my own disbelief, I did great in college. I was on the Dean's List a few times and graduated with honors. I guess being in an environment where I could learn about things that interested me woke up a hunger for knowledge I didn't know existed.
When I graduated I applied for an internship on The Late Show with David Letterman in NYC. One day, Dave and I threw a football back and forth in the hallway for an hour, and later I met Bill Murray. That was a great day. After the internship I went to work in tv production and helped make documentaries about people who live in the subway and circus folk who swallow swords. I worked for MTV and VH1 and Nickelodeon and then one day I decided to write a book. Writing always made me happy and I got lucky and someone wanted to publish it. The book was a hit, so I wrote another one, and then another, and another. And now, I'm working on my 18th book and it's what I do all the time. I live in Brooklyn with my wife, Alison, our son Finn, and my dog Friday.
